How Our Photography Legacy Began: The Story of The Art Gallery Studio, Poona 1952
# **How Our Photography Legacy Began**
### **A Framed Beginning. A Fateful Friendship. A Destiny Developed in the Darkroom.**
After the Partition, when trains carried more loss than luggage, my grandfather **Hemandas Fathumal Ramchandani** stepped into Devlali with little more than his stubborn courage and a pair of skilled hands. Like countless Sindhis who had been scattered overnight, he carried no wealth — just the quiet determination to rebuild.
In Devlali, he returned to what he did best: **framing memories for others while carrying his own unframed heartbreak within.**
Life moved slowly but steadily. A few years later, with hope leading and necessity pushing, he shifted to Poona. The family squeezed into a small home, and the framing shop became the centre of survival. The two elder sons joined the business; the younger ones — including my father — watched from school benches, absorbing lessons meant for life.
Everything was ordinary. Predictable. Safe.
**Until the day destiny walked into the shop wearing a gentle smile and the name Mr. Arole.**
---
## **The Kind of Customer Who Becomes Family**
Mr. Arole wasn’t just another face among the customers. He was a **gentleman of culture**, a well-travelled soul who spoke softly but saw deeply. An amateur photographer who developed his own films, he would visit often to get his prints framed. Over time, his visits lingered, conversations deepened, and a quiet friendship formed.
One afternoon in 1952, while examining a freshly framed photograph, he said casually — yet unmistakably —
“**Hemandas, have you ever thought of starting a photo studio?**”
Grandpa chuckled, rubbing sawdust off his hands.
“**Arre saab, yeh sab humare bas ki baat nahi. Studio? Itne paise kahan se laaun?**”
But Mr. Arole kept looking at him with an expression Grandpa couldn’t quite decode — a mix of admiration, belief, and perhaps a hint of mischievous planning.
He leaned slightly closer.
“**Dost… kaam tum karoge. Investment main karunga.**
People want their moments captured. You have the patience, the eye — and the honesty. Don’t let your talent stay limited to frames.”
Grandpa dismissed it with another laugh, assuming it was friendly encouragement.
Little did he know — the man meant every word.
---
## **The Day Belief Arrived in a Car**
A few days later, the family heard a car honking outside — a rare sound in that quiet neighbourhood. Mr. Arole stepped out, sleeves rolled up, with his car filled to the brim with strange, exciting things:
📷 A gleaming camera
🎞️ Film rolls packed neatly
🧪 Developer & fixer bottles clinking
🖨️ A sturdy enlarger
📚 Thick books on photography and darkroom techniques
🛠️ Tools, trays, and sheer belief
Grandpa froze.
“**Saab… yeh sab?**”
Mr. Arole grinned.
“**Ab studio khologe ya main kholun? Tum bas shuru karo, Hemandas. Ek hafte mein ‘Opening’ chahiye.**”
That moment changed the air in the house — it was no longer a home, it was a mission headquarters.
Grandpa turned to his sons with fire in his eyes:
“**CHALO… kaam shuru! Ab hum peeche nahin hatenge!**”
---
## **Seven Days. One Small Room. A Lifetime of Dreams.**
Those next seven days were magic.
Walls were scrubbed.
Curtains stitched.
Lights adjusted again and again.
The enlarger was tested until midnight.
Books were read like scripture.
Film developing became a family ritual.
In that cramped room that smelled of chemistry and ambition, a legacy was being shaped.
And exactly one week later, with the lights glowing softly and the name scribbled proudly on a wooden board, **The Art Gallery** was born.
📍 **Poona, 1952**
A modest studio with grand dreams.
---
## **The First Clicks, The First Mistakes**
The early days were full of innocence and chaos.
Photos blurred.
Negatives fogged.
Children moved.
Customers blinked.
And once, a goat wandered inside the shop during a group photo.
But nobody gave up.
Slowly, the exposures improved. People began recognising the sincerity in Grandpa’s work. The Art Gallery earned its place — not through marketing, but through **trust, humility, and the blessings of countless families whose moments were preserved forever.**
---
## **The Man Who Saw Potential Before Anyone Else**
Even today, when we talk about our roots, one name always comes with folded hands and heartfelt respect: **Mr. Arole**.
The man who saw beyond a framer’s table.
The man who gifted belief when money was scarce.
The man who changed not just a business — but the destiny of generations.
Our journey didn’t just *start* because of him.
It *endures* because of the values that moment taught us:
**Friendship. Gratitude. Craftsmanship. And the courage to say yes when destiny knocks.**
---
This is how our photography legacy was born.
A frame, a friendship, and a push from fate.
**And trust me — this is only Chapter One.**
