The Nikon EM Story
Can a totally Amateur camera be used for pro use & that
too in a rugged way? If Nikon had seen what we were doing to the Nikon EM model
they would have recalled all their cameras from us or maybe rewarded us for
doing it.
It all started with a gift from one of my uncles, who
brought it for us thinking Nikon EM was a professional model and would be
useful for us in our studio & outdoor shoots. At first we too ignored the
camera as we were already using Nikon FM, FM2 & F2AS.
But one fine day one of the boys had to go for a small shoot
& all cameras were busy. So we gave him the Nikon EM with a normal flash.
Now this camera has only 3 speed settings. M90 for flash, B & Auto. In auto
it would determine the speed as per the aperture & ISO setting. So the boy
was asked to just shoot in M90, which 1/90 of a second flash synchro speed. He
came back with good results.
We started using it regularly now for all small events &
also new staff would be given this camera to test their skills as well as
patience.
Now we too started enjoying the camera for its simplicity &
ease of use & at one point of time I had 4 bodies of EM, with lenses
supporting them. Also I would take one EM with motor drive always with me as a backup
camera for my advertising & industrial shoots too.
I would use auto mode & play with the ISO to get the
desired shutter speeds for getting background detail etc.
Fellow photographers sometimes used to wonder whether I was
a professional photographer or an advanced amateur, but that did not bother me
as I was enjoying the ease & convenience of the super compact Nikon EM.
Take a Bow Nikon
