The Rich Simplicity: A Lesson in Humility from an Andhra Village | Lost & Found Series
It was sometime in 2012 when I travelled deep into rural Andhra Pradesh for a farm chemical advertisement shoot. The agency had identified a family for the campaign — a picture-perfect representation of rural India: a modest home, simple clothing, a few cattle, and smiles that spoke of contentment.
But as I interacted with them, I was in for a surprise. Beneath the simplicity was quiet prosperity. They were not struggling farmers, but rather well-off landowners, living with remarkable grace and humility.
Their warmth was overwhelming — from serving us tea under the thatched roof to ensuring we had lunch before leaving. Not once did they show the slightest trace of pride or superiority.
Standing there with my camera, I caught myself smiling at the irony — in our cities, wealth often creates distance, but here, it had only deepened their humanity.
That day, I didn’t just capture photographs — I captured a lesson. A reminder that richness is not in possessions, but in how generously we share our hearts.
I left the village filled with gratitude, my camera full of images, and my soul a little lighter.
