Illuminating Vintage Lamps: A 1992 Packaging Shoot Challenge

 

Back in 1992, I took on a fascinating project at GG Studios International: shooting vintage and antique lamps for packaging. The primary challenge was to achieve a consistent glow in each lamp, ensuring they looked inviting and elegant on the final carton print—a task that required both precision and creativity.

I used a Linhof camera in 120 film 6x9 format with a normal lens, a setup ideal for capturing the fine details of the lamps. The lighting was kept simple yet effective, utilizing three Elinchrome lights. Two softboxes were positioned on either side of the lamps to create soft highlights on the glass, accentuating their intricate designs and textures. To add drama and contrast, I used a background spotlight with a colored gel, which helped the lamps stand out vividly against the backdrop, ensuring the final print would catch the eye on store shelves.

The shoot took six hours of meticulous adjustments to perfect the glow and balance the lighting across each lamp. The effort paid off, resulting in a series of images that beautifully showcased the vintage charm of the lamps while meeting the packaging requirements.

This project remains a memorable example of how thoughtful lighting and composition can bring out the best in product photography, even with the simplest setups.
