Adding Drama with Gels: A 1990s Pharma Company Shoot

Ah, the love of the industry! My passion for travel always drew me to industrial photography in the mid-1990s. I cherished visiting factories, meeting people, and eating at roadside dhabas—those experiences were as much a part of the journey as the photography itself. Reflecting on those days from June 2025, I can’t help but miss the adventure and camaraderie that came with every shoot.

This particular shot was taken in a pharmaceutical company, where we used the Bronica ETRS (6x4.5) 120 format with a normal lens. Factory and industry walls are often drab, dirty, or both, so we relied heavily on colored gels to transform the scene. To add drama and cover up the uninspiring backdrop, we used blue and red lights in the background, allowing some of the light to spill onto the lab operator for a cohesive look. A single spotlight from behind the lab operator separated him from the background, creating a halo effect that also highlighted him as the focal point of the image.

The lighting setup consisted of three Elinchrome lights, carefully positioned to balance the dramatic colored gels with the need for a well-lit subject. The result was a striking image that brought life and energy to an otherwise mundane industrial setting.

Those days of shooting industries may be behind me, but the memories—and the shots—remain timeless treasures.
