# π· **Why Most Photographers & Photo Entrepreneurs Fail**
*Lessons from a 3rd Generation Photographer*
---
I am a **third-generation photographer** — and I say that with immense pride.
My grandfather began his photography journey in 1952 in Poona, at a time when every photograph was a craft, not a click. My father carried that legacy forward, moving to Hyderabad in 1964 and building a studio from scratch.
And then came my turn…
---
## π§ The “Harsh” Training I Never Understood
As a teenager, during school holidays, I was sent to the studio.
Not as the owner’s son.
Not as someone special.
But as a **regular staff member**.
My duties?
* Sweep the floors
* Mop them
* Dust everything
* Serve tea and snacks to customers
* Run errands
At home, I was pampered like a prince.
At the studio… I felt like a worker.
To be honest, I felt hurt. Even humiliated at times.
“Why me?” I would wonder.
---
## π‘ What I Realised Years Later
That was not humiliation.
That was **foundation**.
My father wasn’t just teaching me photography.
He was teaching me:
* **Humility**
* **Discipline**
* **Respect for every role**
* **Self-reliance**
He was preparing me for a day when:
π No staff shows up
π A client is waiting
π Work still has to be delivered
And you… have to do everything.
That is the **true spirit of an entrepreneur**.
---
## ❤️ The Hidden Gift: Compassion
That phase changed me deeply.
I developed a natural respect and compassion for:
* Support staff
* Helpers
* Workers doing so-called “small jobs”
Because I had *been there*.
And when you understand people,
π You build better teams
π You build better businesses
---
## π When I Started My Own Business
I carried those lessons forward.
In an industry where:
* Overtime wasn’t paid
* Bonuses were rare
I made it a point to:
* Pay fairly
* Give overtime
* Offer Diwali bonuses
People were surprised.
But something magical happened…
π I attracted the **best people**
π People wanted to work with me
π Some were even ready to work for free just to learn
But I did something different.
I **paid even the learners**.
Because:
* It gave them dignity
* It motivated them
* It made them serious about learning
---
## π§Ή Yes… I Made Them Sweep Floors Too
Just like my father did with me,
I made every newcomer:
* Sweep floors
* Do basic chores
Not to insult them.
But to test two things:
### 1. π₯ Hunger to Learn
Are they willing to do *anything* to grow?
### 2. π Humility
Do they respect the process?
Only those who passed this test…
π Moved ahead
π Learned the real craft
---
## ⚠️ Where Most Photographers Fail Today
Here’s the truth — slightly uncomfortable, but necessary.
Today, many photographers:
* Buy an expensive camera
* Create an Instagram page
* Call themselves “professional”
* Start charging clients
But they skip the most important step…
π **Learning under someone**
---
## π§ What You Miss When You Skip Learning
When you don’t work under someone, you miss:
* How to handle difficult clients
* Real negotiation skills
* Vendor networks (where to get best deals)
* Crisis management during shoots
* Workflow efficiency
* Hidden “street-smart” business hacks
These things are never taught on YouTube.
They are **experienced**.
---
## π― The Reality Check
Photography is not just:
π· Taking good pictures
It is:
* People management
* Time management
* Crisis handling
* Business understanding
* Emotional intelligence
---
## π± My Advice to Every Young Photographer
Before you jump into business:
π Work under someone
π Observe everything
π Do even the smallest tasks
π Stay grounded
Because…
**The camera can be bought.
But wisdom has to be earned.**
---
## π¬ Final Thought
Looking back, those days of sweeping floors were not my lowest moments…
They were my **strongest foundation**.
And maybe, just maybe…
That’s what separates
π Those who *start* photography
from
π Those who *sustain and succeed* in it.
