When Devotion Went Mobile: The 8mm Sai Baba Darshan Journey

When Faith Was Captured on Film – The 8mm Darshan Journey

Long before YouTube.
Long before smartphones.
Long before “live darshan” became a tap away…

There was a man with an 8mm camera…
…and a heart overflowing with devotion.

My father, Purshotham Das Ramchandani (Pishu), had already been photographing Sai Baba in Hyderabad and Puttaparthi. But still photographs, no matter how beautiful, felt incomplete.

Because what he witnessed… couldn’t be frozen in a single frame.

It had movement.
It had grace.
It had something beyond explanation.

So he took a leap.

With his humble 8mm color film camera — no sound, no automation, no luxury — he began capturing living moments of divinity:

📽️ Baba’s Hyderabad visit at Sivam
📽️ Dussehra celebrations in Puttaparthi
📽️ Birthday processions filled with devotion and energy

Each reel was shot with patience…
Each frame, with reverence.

🎞️ Editing with Emotion, Not Just Skill

Filming was only half the journey.

Back in the studio, Dad would spend hours — sometimes days — manually editing the film. Cutting, joining, refining…

Not just technically — but emotionally.

The result?

A set of 2–3 beautifully crafted reels, capturing:

✨ Baba walking among devotees
✨ Blessings being given
✨ That rare, divine smile
✨ Moments that felt… alive

🎥 The First Screening – A Silent Miracle

The first screening was held at Sivam Temple during a festival.

No hype. No expectations.

Just a projector…
a white screen…
and a gathering of curious devotees.

And then…

The film began.

Baba appeared on screen — moving, blessing, walking.

Not a still image.
Not a memory.

A presence.

The silence in the room turned into emotion.
Eyes widened.
Hands folded.
Tears flowed.

🔥 When Devotion Traveled Village to Village

Word spread.

And it spread fast.

Soon, devotees from across Andhra Pradesh began inviting Dad to their towns and villages.

They didn’t just want to see Baba.
They wanted to experience Him.

They arranged travel.
They hosted him.
They offered a small fee — not as payment, but as gratitude.

Because for many…

🚫 They had never been to Puttaparthi
🚫 They couldn’t afford the journey
🚫 They were too old to travel

But through those reels…

Baba came to them.

💧 When a Cameraman Became a Messenger

People didn’t see my father as just a photographer anymore.

They saw him as a bridge.
A medium.
A messenger.

One devotee once said:

“You brought God closer to us… what temple could have done more?”

And that was the truth.

With a simple camera…
a strip of film…
and a heart full of seva…

He made divinity portable.

⚙️ The Jugaad That Saved a Darshan

The story doesn’t end there.

At one point, Dad trained his nephew — a technically sound, quick-thinking young man — to carry this mission forward.

During one such screening in a small town, disaster struck.

⚠️ The projector belt snapped.
⚠️ The film stopped.
⚠️ The audience fell silent… disappointed.

But he didn’t panic.

After a moment of thought, he asked for something unusual:

👉 An old cycle tube

He cut it… shaped it… and created a makeshift belt.

It wasn’t perfect.
It ran at a slightly different speed.

But it worked.

And when the film resumed…

No one complained.
No one noticed the speed.

Because all they wanted was one thing:

Darshan.

That night, he wasn’t just paid more…

He was treated like someone special — someone who refused to let faith break.

More Than Innovation… It Was Seva

This wasn’t business.

This wasn’t strategy.

This was innovation driven by devotion.

A reminder that:

👉 Technology doesn’t create impact
👉 Intent does

And when creativity meets purpose…

It travels far beyond expectations.
